Genre: Gay Fiction, Detective, Mystery

Synopsis

Paul Solomon is a homicide detective in Baltimore, a city with a high murder rate and a complicated relationship between the police and the citizens they are sworn to protect.

He’s also a gay man who has been out on the job since he first joined. Being out on a tough police force hasn’t always been easy, but living with integrity is important to him.

Paul’s love life becomes as tumultuous as his job with the demise of his relationship of eight years. While dealing with the emotional and physical upheaval in his personal life, a case comes across his desk that hits a little too close to home—the murder of two gay teenagers.

Paul and his partner, Tim Cullen, must solve the double homicide, and Paul has to find a way to move on from his failed relationship.

Tim brought the bottle of Jameson to the living room and poured them each too much Irish whiskey. Then he held up his glass and said, “Sláinte,” and Paul rolled his eyes at him.
“Give me a break. You’ve never even been to Ireland, and you certainly don’t speak any fucking Gaelic. You’re probably not even saying it right.”
Tim shook his head and laughed, taking a large gulp. “You are unbelievable. I’m letting you stay here for free and you’re giving me grief about the authenticity of my cultural behaviors?”
Paul took a drink, too, and nodded. “Yes. Yes, I fucking well am. And besides, I don’t know about ‘free’, if I’m springing for meals and alcohol the whole time.”
“I never said the whole time, but now it’s going to be. Dude,” he said, pausing to finish off the whiskey, “you’re in a shitty mood because your ex had a date over and you’re taking it out on me. So I’m going to choose not to take offense, if that’s all right with you.”
“Eric,” Paul said glumly. “Why are guys like that all named Eric?”
Tim shrugged and refilled both of their glasses. “He didn’t pick his own name, Paulie,” Tim said in an infuriatingly reasonable voice. “You can’t hold that against him. He seemed nice; don’t you think?”
“I think he seemed kind of arrogant,” Paul lied. He drank some more.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I didn’t get that, but you might have talked to him more. But I guess I might be a little arrogant, too, if I looked like that guy.”
