Blurb

An actor on possession charges, hell bent on destroying his own life meets a man who quietly works to make the world a better place.

Jacob Riley is a typical Hollywood former child star with issues. He has already done prison time and at the age of twenty-six has been arrested again.

Ethan Myers is the owner and manager of Macs, an education center providing teaching and learning to local low income families. Losing his partner to cancer leaves him lost and alone and he buries himself in his work to start to mend his broken heart.

Sparks fly when Jacob has to complete his community service at Macs. Their relationship grows against a background of disenfranchised street gang members, arson, the Oscars, and despite their prejudices.

Can Jacob Riley be saved?

3.75 out of 5 stars

Moments is a new standalone contemporary m/m romance. This story features two very different characters who eventually overcome their differences to fall in love.

Ethan is a former teacher who now runs MACS, a learning center in a neighborhood that is rebuilding after pushing out the gang activity and crime. The center teaches life skills, reading and writing, and things to help the residents better themselves or complete education that they lacked. He's running the center on a shoestring and what was left from his partner's estate, so when he's approached by Mr Riley with a donation for the center to allow his son to work out his community service sentence, he finds it hard to refuse.

Jacob Riley is a child star who's been in trouble for years. He's faced addictions to drugs and alcohol and has a hellacious temper. While he's been clean and sober for over a year when he's arrested again for possession he's given one last chance to fix himself. His last chance is at MACS with Ethan. Jacob feels, and in turn acts, like everyone is against him and that he's not to blame for his behavior. He acts out and against anyone trying to help him or anyone to questions his actions. Once Jacob moves into MACS he's faced with a slew of restrictions, rules, and guidelines. At first he balks at them, but he does do them, with an attitude. Eventually things change as Jacob changes including he and Ethan falling for each other.

While there were really good moments in Moments, a portion of the story felt unfinished to me, particularly when it came to Ethan. There is a lack of backstory to fill out the blanks in his history. It's only one brief sentence later in the book that says how long it's been since his partner had passed away. There is only a brief touch upon the panic attacks he suffers but nothing about what's caused them or how long he's had them. There's also a decided lack of any mention of his family, if he has any, if they speak or don't, etc.

Now this doesn't mean that the story isn't good, it's very readable and contains a good romance within it. I'm just the type of reader that the characters backgrounds are important especially when they're creating part of the story. This doesn't mean that others may feel the same way, and I highly encourage every reader to pick up the book for themselves to make their own opinion. There is a fantastic secondary cast in Mateo, Isabella, and baby Beth, and Jacob's transition from an asshole into a person who actually takes responsibility for his actions is well written.

Again while parts of the story didn't work for me, this was still a good read and I recommend that other readers take the chance on it to get their own opinion.
